Crochet

I love to crochet! I do a lot more of reading patterns than I do of making them myself. So unless otherwise stated, none of these items were made from my own designs, though most were modified to fit my taste. Every designer I have used is mentioned with links to each pattern unless I designed it myself.

Stella Fingerless Mittens

This is my design modeled by my good friend Sophie! The pattern is now available for purchase here on Ravelry. I used several colors from Quince & Co's Tern line of wool and silk blend yarns. Good stuff!

Tempting Taupe Afghan (in Light Sage)

This afghan, "Tempting Taupe," is featured in the book Afghan Lover's Collection and is designed by Barbara Shaffer. You can see more of her designs here. I used Red Heart Super Saver Solids in Light Sage and it took about two months. It's now at home on my pop's couch.

Floral Lace Shawl

I made this shawl for my mom for Christmas (2011). The pattern for it can be found here. I used Patons Grace yarn, Tangelo colored, and it took me about two weeks to finish.

Paperback Clutch

I made this purse in an afternoon over a year ago. I needed an excuse to smack these awesome buttons on something. I used a lace pattern from 281 Shell Patterns. I used ribbon on the strap and mouth of the purse to add detail and color.

Renaissance Drawstring Apron Top

This top was actually inspired by the Tube Apron Top with Lacing by Erika and Monika Simmons. You can buy the pattern for their version here.

I didn't write a pattern for mine because I had no idea how it would turn out. In the end I used a silk ribbon for the drawstring and as a nice band in front for extra detail.

The hat looks knitted but it's not! This pattern uses lots of post stitches and clusters. I used a fine wool yarn for this one and it took much longer than the scarf to make. I made this scarf super long with tassels which I tried to capture on camera. This is the Stone Path Hat by Lisa Naskrent found here on Ravelry. The pattern for the Retro Scarf by Marcy Smith is here on CrochetMe.

I love making slouchy hats! This is a lace pattern scarf I made, off-white with and olive green border and beaded tassels. The hat is the same color as the scarf border and was worked center out starting from a simple flower motif.

Wow, I need a new camera. Shirt is brown, hat is blue. This is the In Bloom Beret  by Brittney Waterhouse. I found the pattern here on Ravelry.

This is a scarf I made using tunisian crochet techniques and a basic lace pattern from Kim Guzman's Learn to Do Tunisian Lace Stitches. I used variegated 1 -ply homespun wool. Too bad the colors don't show up well here, but it's super soft!

This is the Athena Tabard Tunic designed by Doris Chan. You can find the pattern here on Ravelry. I modified this pattern by cross stitching both sides completely to the bottom so that it would fit my figure better. I used a sport weight yarn which made the garment come out larger than I wanted, even on the smallest gauge. Yarn recommended was Naturally Caron Spa which would have made the shaping come out  completely different. This will still go good with a nice turtleneck and some leggings!

I used Caron Simply Soft yarn for both the top and the scarf. Sweet Lorraine Lace scarf design by Doris Chan (my favorite designer). Pattern can be downloaded for free from Crochetme.com
Custom tank design by Jane Sharp. Pattern can be found here. I added a picot edging to the bottom edge.

Written in the spirit of crochet...

building the line

"chain ten more," nanny says as we sit,

and i watch as her hands
single crochet, double, treble, popcorn and
cluster stitch lifeless yarn into lustrous intricate design.
watching is how cousin and i learn to know it, as did my aunties
and mama as well.
we are learning to grow with her on our shoulders.
small, damp fingers fumbling with sticky wool
until they move steady and the string flows like water through my palms.
when i have one-hundred chains
i teach cousin how to chain
and we sit quietly as time grows on
she, watching my hands
i, watching nanny's hands
as we slowly build her up.
